Jaco is known for its main beach, but the area has incredible hidden gems that locals cherish.

1. Playa Hermosa
Playa Hermosa is just 5 minutes south of Jaco, this black sand beach is a surfer's paradise. Strong waves make it ideal for experienced surfers, and it's much quieter than Jaco Beach. Best for surfers, not ideal for swimming.

2. Playa Herradura
Playa Herradura is a horseshoe-shaped bay on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, just north of Jacó. A peaceful, curved bay perfect for swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. The calm waters make it great for families, and you might spot pelicans diving for fish. Good sunset views due to the curved bay. Less surf-focused than Jacó (better for relaxing than surfing). Los Sueños Marina nearby — popular for sport fishing

3. Playa Mantas
Playa Mantas is a scenic beach on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, located near Punta Leona, between Jacó and Carara National Park. A secluded beach accessible via a short hike through jungle trails. The effort is worth it - you'll often have the entire beach to yourself. Great for tide pooling! Clearer water than many central Pacific beaches. Lush green hills surrounding the bay. Wildlife sightings (monkeys and pelicans are common).

4. Playa Esterillos
Playa Esterillos is a beautiful stretch of beach on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, located between Jacó and Quepos. Made up of three areas: Esterillos Este, Centro, and Oeste, each offering a quieter alternative to the busier tourist towns nearby. Split into East and West sections, this long stretch of beach offers solitude and stunning sunsets. The waves are perfect for intermediate surfers.

5. Playa Pita
Playa Pita isn’t widely recognized as an official beach name — It is a tiny hidden cove between rocks, accessible at low tide. Local fishermen often sell fresh catches here in the morning. Many photos labeled “Playa Pita” actually show parts of Esterillos Este or nearby quiet sections of shoreline.
Pro tip: Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Bring plenty of water and watch for riptides - Costa Rica's Pacific coast has strong currents.
